You will have noticed how the Te Ara Piko Pathway is stretching its legs around the Pauatahanui Inlet with it now being a well-used way of enjoying the beauty and serenity of the Inlet between Motukaraka Point and Ration Creek. Planning for the next stage is well underway and when this section is completed it will be a great walk from the Pauatahanui Village to the Point and back.
Keen observers of the Pathway will have noticed that it is slowly disappearing in parts, certainly not from neglect but from the growth of vegetation close to it. There has long been a restoration planting plan which has been designed to ensure the Pathway becomes unobtrusively part of the natural environment. The fact that some parts of the Pathway now appear hidden is part of this plan and demonstrates its effectiveness.
Key to the plan is both the provision of plants and the actual planting of them. The Pathway is a joint project of the Porirua City Council and the Rotary Club of Plimmerton. One of the tasks undertaken by Rotary is the operation of a nursery dedicated to growing plants for the Pathway restoration and of course planting them as they reach maturity.
On Saturday 24 August 2013 at 9.30 a.m., the last planting around the Pathway for this year will be undertaken at Ration Point with weeding and general maintenance at the nursery being undertaken at the same time. Planting and nursery work is well supported by Rotarians but if you and your family would like to join the fun and help Rotarians make a difference around the Pauatahanui Inlet, come to the Rotary Nursery on Paekakariki Hill Road on Saturday 24 August. Everyone is welcome and you need only bring some gloves and a spade to help. Enjoying a sausage and coffee afterwards is also a great time to find out anything you want to know about the Pathway.
