Future Leaders Honoured
Porirua’s young future leaders were honoured today for going the extra mile to serve their schools and the wider community.
The Rotary Clubs of Porirua, together with Porirua City Council, presented Primary School Leadership Awards to 54 local school children at a ceremony at Elim Church.
Mayor Nick Leggett was proud to present each of the children with their certificate.
“These kids are fantastic role models for their peers. They show integrity, determination and drive and lead by example. But perhaps most importantly they show kindness, support and aroha to younger children, or those who need a hand,” Mayor Leggett said.
“With young people like these already showing such outstanding leadership qualities our city is clearly in very good hands.”
Porirua City Council has children and young people at the centre of city decisions as one of its strategic priorities.
At the ceremony today was Mana MP Kris Faafoi.
"Encouraging our children to be confident and to lead is one of the best legacies we can leave. The children being recognised are a great testament to hard work and commitment. We're really proud of them, we all should be," Mr Faafoi said.
Also on hand was Green Party MP Jan Logie.
“Society is relying on these young leaders, and we must do all we can to encourage and support their leadership. Porirua should be proud to have so many outstanding young leaders throughout the community who are stepping up and helping out,” she said.
The children were selected by principals from primary schools throughout Porirua. Two senior students from each school were chosen based on leadership, service above self, and being role models.
The students had been involved in a range of activities including student councils, organising fundraising or leading dance, sporting or cultural groups.
