Cross Creek Return - 28 March 2023

Most of us will have visited the Fell Engine Museum in Featherston, and many of us will have been to the old Cross Creek settlement or walked or biked over the Rimutaka Incline. It’s all a wonderful piece of local history.

But who knew that Past-President Euon Murrell spent the first years of his life at Cross Creek, or that his father Graham was instrumental in restoring the world’s last remaining Fell Engine?

This week Euon spoke to us about the history of the Rimutaka Incline, about which he is very well informed. The incline and the six Fell Engines were used between 1878 and 1955, when the Rimutaka rail tunnel was opened.

Euon was inspired because he recently came across a video of this history, made up of clips from different eras and an interview with his father. His talk included an edited version of the video, which was full of drama and interest, and his audience was enthralled.

PS. There is a very good historical novel by local author Irene Swadling called ‘Cross Creek Return’. It is well worth tracking down.
