Visitors

President Bill gave a warm welcome to Nigel Clarke, Porirua City Council's Senior Advisor Partnerships, Porirua Harbour and Catchments, together with Mayor Anita Baker, a staunch supporter of his work at the Council, who had come in support. With most of the country in Level 2 lockdown, the Mayor and members socially distanced appropriately, at least for the early part of the evening.

He also welcomed Honorary Members, Jim Dearsly and Ron Lucas and said how good it was to see Philip Mottram for one of his periodic visits.

The speaker said …

Mike gave us his usual excellent report on what Nigel Clarke had to tell us. It was a sobering insight into the serious challenge facing the health of our harbour.

Viewpoint

David Pine gave us the Viewpoint tonight about something unexpected that happened on his last visit to the Sharing Shed for a haircut.

What’s coming up in February and beyond?

Next week, Lynda Knight-de-Blois, principal of Glenview Primary School in Porirua, will be talking to us about Trauma Recovery in Education.

The activity has already started for the Book Fair Revival which will be open to the public from 19-21 February 2021 at 4 Lydney Place, Porirua.  Organiser Phillip Reidy thanked all those who have been helping for the last couple of days. Most of the books have been brought down from the lockup. There may be fewer books sold than anticipated because more than initially thought will find their way to recycling. Unfortunately, recycling fees will be big unless something can be negotiated. Phillip told us that the PEP workers have come to help, despite the rain,  and have done a great job. Philip Whearty has assisted enormously by putting up  street signs around the community. President Bill thanked Phillip for all his hard work to get the project going and for his organisation for the event.

President-Elect Kay announced that the March social event will be held on Saturday 20 March, in the afternoon, at the Masterton home of Denise and Dexter Traill. It will be a themed 1973 afternoon! Please let Kay, Denise or Dexter know if you wish to go.  How long is it since you attended a Rotary Conference? Let's go! Registrations are still open for the District Centennial Conference at Carterton Events Centre from 19-21 March. Go to this link. Registrations open for the whole Conference or just the Saturday night dinner - our Club dress theme will be based on 1973.

An early reminder that the meeting on 9 March will be at Whitby Bowls Club. Bill passed around a Board. If you weren't able to indicate your presence or otherwise, please let Bill know. Also expect some Irish "highjinks" at the 16 March meeting...

To see some of our future events, you can go here.

Snippets

President-Elect Kay thanked those who came to Friday Frolics followed by the pizza and fish and chips 'party' at her home afterwards which everyone who came enjoyed. She thought it was the best Frolic so far!

Treasurer Bruce talked about the shrapnel contributions to which have been dwindling as so few members have spare cash in their pockets these days. As a result of this and the limited number of sergeant sessions, funds that usually go towards the Charitable Trust have reduced dramatically from over $5,000 to closer to $1,000. President Bill will be holding a Forum in March and Bruce asked members to think of creative ways to supplement the shortfall, perhaps by adding a donation to our annual subscription.

This week’s happenings

Reading at Rangikura School begins again at 9.30 am on Thursday 18 February. Please let Mike know if you can help.

Mana Zonta is holding their annual Breakfast to celebrate International Women's Day on Sunday 7 March at the Plimmerton Bowling Club, 11 Grays Road, Plimmerton.  The guest speaker is Dr. Sarah Leberman of Massey University, a leading campaigner for women's rights in Sport and Education.  Last year, Sarah received the Zonta NZ Women of the Biennium. You can find details for price and payment on their IWD_Poster

The Almoner said …

Almoner John reports that Les is still in Ward 5 at Kenepuru Hospital and would welcome visitors. If you are going to ring him and have trouble getting through to him using the Hospital landline number, try his mobile number (on the membership list). Annette will do what she can to make sure that he keeps it turned on.

Parting thought

Wendy gave us the Parting Thought tonight. It's anonymous and says, 'May you have the hindsight to know where you have been, the foresight to know where you are going and the insight to know when you have gone too far.'
