Wendy LAPresident Donna welcomed back Wendy Betteridge after her amazing holiday around the world. Wendy elaborated on the upcoming Primary School Leadership Awards at Elim Church (Refer to What’s coming up in August and beyond?). Wendy also thanked Bill McAulay for all the work he did on this project while she was away.

If you are interested in attending the Cycling hui on Wednesday 5 September, please contact Donna.

President Donna gave us further detail about our off-site meeting on 28 August. She explained the benefits of the visit both to the school and to us as Rotarians and individuals. We practised the waiata (song) we will sing on this visit and at the Leadership Awards. For those who need a reminder the words are:
Ehara i te mea
inaianei te aroha
Nō ngā tupuna
(I) tuku iho, (i) tuku iho
Although a number of people listed their names as attending, it is important that all members respond to Donna as soon as possible. Numbers are needed for the students who will prepare the meal. The Waka Championship in Tahiti is very prestigious and the Kura students’ winning crew are deserved participants. It is an honour to be "called on" formally so please support our President, a local school and expand your knowledge at the same time. Our Sergeant's Session helped raise funds for this project.

We were told that $5000  has been contributed to Balibo by District 9940 clubs: Tawa, Porirua, Ngamotu New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington North, and, of course, Plimmerton.

Past President Jenny will chair next week's meeting in the absence of President Donna.

This week’s happenings

We have received the August edition of the Inner Wheel Newsletter.  You can read it here. Actually, their July Newsletter has sneaked in there as well and you can read it in the same place.

What’s coming up in August and beyond?

On 21 August, Ragne Maxwell, principal of Porirua College, and two of her students will be talking to us. Ragne says that 'the ideas of student leadership and community service are key foci for us this year'.

On Wednesday 22 August, Rotary Tawa and the Tawa Business Club have invited us to join them for a Business Breakfast at 7.00 am. The speaker will be Dave Greenburg, former Westpac Rescue Helicopter pilot. Here is their flyer.  Flyer_for_Tawa_Business_Breakfast_22.8.18

The Mary Potter Hospice pop up shop will be open on 25 August. There will be a Cluster BBQ all day.

Our meeting on 25 August will be off-site at Te Kura Maori o Porirua (formerly Waitangirua Intermediate School).

Remember to come and support our city's future leaders at the Primary School Leadership Awards on Monday 27 August at 10.30-12.00. Your help with shepherding from about 9.30 am onwards will be invaluable so please get in touch with Wendy if you can make it.

In memoriam

It is with deep sadness that we report the death of Brian Paget on 8 August after a brief illness. Since moving from our area he has been enjoying retirement in the Wairarapa. Our thoughts are with Kate and their family.

The Almoner said …

Spencer Harris had a fall at home last week and is now in Ward 5 at Kenepuru Hospital. He has had his hip pinned.
Noel Evans has made a remarkable recovery and is out and about again.

Viewpoint

Viewpoint ColinAs well as making a provocative comment about the seat of rugby in New Zealand, Colin Whyte presented a detailed and interesting argument about the choices we have to maintain sufficient energy in the world to sustain the growing population. He challenged Government thinking about energy sources. Click here for the full speech.

Parting thought

Tania Woodcock wanted to tie her parting thought in with this week’s theme of 125 Years of Women’s Suffrage. She found this very apt quote from St Francis of Assisi: “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
