The speaker said …

Although there was no official speaker, our Global Grant Vocational Scholar, Jessica Sebastian, was welcomed by President Donna and then introduced by Graeme Blick, her Counsellor during her Scholarship. Jessica gave us a little background about herself, including her position as Managing Solicitor for the Community Law Centre where she developed her passion for the plight of refugees.  Jessica was the youngest person in New Zealand to hold this position from which she has just resigned to take up her Scholarship. Jessica thanked the Club for supporting her nomination.

Snippets

President Donna welcomed Marty Donoghue back into the Club and presented him with his Board pin as Community Director. She also presented Graeme Tongs with his Secretary's badge.

Donna reminded us that AG Adrienne is away for a month.

There was a reminder to collect and pay for Balibo movie night tickets that you can read more about in the opposite column.

Past President Jenny represented our Club at the 20th birthday of the Combined Probus Club of Mana. She reported that it was a friendly and sociable occasion.

The Outside World

Rotary members from Durango, Colorado, USA, team with the Navajo Nation to bring solar lights to remote, off-the-grid homes on the country’s largest Native American reservation.

Parting thought

Richard Sherwin’s last word for the evening was, “ I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.”

Visitor

Our sole visitor this week was Jessica Sebastian, Global Grant Scholar.

In the Changeover Update, we mentioned Daniel Raneira Albert who gave a fascinating description of the stars of Matariki, ending with a superbly sung waiata. In 2013, being aware of Daniel's outstanding leadership and potential, Wendy wrote a blog about him on the site Talent. If you read this, you won't be surprised at how fast Daniel has grown and developed.

No doubt you've already received the District 9940 Changeover bulletin, but just in case, here it is.

What’s coming up in July and beyond?

Next week, on 17 July, Kris Faafoi will be speaking to us. He is committed to ensuring the wheels of commerce move smoothly and that New Zealand tackles every advantage it can to grow our economy, jobs, wages, and opportunities.

There are still a few tickets left for the Balibo movie fundraiser on 18 July. There will be soup and rolls at 5.00 pm and the movie begins at 6.00 pm. Donna has asked for volunteers please to help with the soup and also for the raffle. Please contact Donna if you can help. Ticket payments of $25 each should go to Plimmerton Trust account 101563 060565 0115702 00. Add your name and let Donna know how many tickets you want. Proceeds will go to the roof of the school being constructed in Belola.

Porirua Rotary are also having a movie fundraiser of Mama Mia II on Monday 22 July. If you can go, please get in touch with their new President, Paula Williams. We very much hope that their members will support our Balibo movie too.

On 24 July, David Grant will talk to us about the fourteen conscientious objectors who were taken against their will to the front-line on France in July 1917.

On 31 July, Russell Jenkins from the Wellington Tramway Museum will talk to us about the work of the Museum and Wellington's tram history.
