Visitors

President Euon welcomed our speaker, the Honourable Kris Faafoi, together with Theo Sutorius (son of Tony and Tania) who took the Viewpoint slot, Gaylene Lines, Inbound Coordinator for the International Youth Exchange Committee, Carmen Jennings, Principal of Discovery School, and partners, Velma Knight and Anne-Marie Whooley

The Speaker said ...

Kris Faafoi described his work as Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, a big job which takes him away from his electorate more than he would like. As Mike captured in this blog, there is a lot going on. Kris focussed on several high profile issues that are exercising his Ministry.

Viewpoint

Theo Sutorius took the Viewpoint slot tonight and told us a bit about himself and his International Youth Exchange to the Netherlands in January. He is particularly excited because he has a connection to the Netherlands through his grandfather (grootvader or Opa as he called him). He is also following in the footsteps of many of his relations as a volunteer firefighter as was evidenced immediately after the meeting when the Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade siren was sounding and he and Tony rushed to their car to answer the summons.

This week's happenings

Mana Zonta has sent a reminder that there are still some tickets available for the Arohata Inside Out Concert on 4 and 5 December. If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, there's still time and you can find all the details on their flyer. They have also sent us their December newsletter which makes fascinating reading.

You may remember when Jo Alderdice from Little Sprouts came to talk to us in February. Whether or not you do, you may be interested to know that Little Sprouts won the health and well-being award at the Wellington Regional Community Awards 2019 for the whole Wellington region!

Snippets

President Euon reported that the Charity Golf Tournament had been very successful and had raised approximately $6,000-$6,500 for the Mary Potter Hospice in Porirua. Chris Garrett and his team had done an excellent job and were to be congratulated on the outcome.

Chris Garrett would like to remind members that he organises a monthly wine and cheese event. These take place monthly on a Sunday from 4.00-6.00pm at various venues. The next one will be in January. If you are not currently on his list, please let him know so that you can join in with the fun.

Thanks to Graeme Tongs, a new membership list is available in the Intranet. It not only shows Ann's details but also a few changes that have taken place recently. As you know, you have to log in to access the Intranet ...

Comings and Goings

Mike Doig introduced Ann Scannell. Her ‘bio’ has been circulated to club members so we know that she farms up the Paekakariki Hill Road and is a former teacher. She mentioned that her daughter, Becks, attended the Auckland Science and Technology Forum sixteen years ago. President Euon introduced her to the club and called upon members to welcome her.

Editor's note: Ann is now in the Member Directory but, because there is no cell phone coverage from any provider on the upper Paekakariki Hill Road, her mobile won't always work.  However, her landline is available.

What's coming up in December and beyond?

David Knight has organised this year’s Parumoana Primary School Speech Competition which will be held this Friday 29 November at 9.00 for 9.30 am. at Discovery School, Pullen Lane, Whitby. He urged members to come along to hear the seventeen speeches which he knows, from 14 years’ experience, will be well worth hearing. He thanked Phillip Reidy for producing the certificates, one of which will be handed to each contestant.

Next week, 3 December, is the date for the Children's Christmas Party. Please remember to let Allan know your final numbers. You can find all his instructions on the events page. He told us that there are still spaces for more children!

And the following week, 10 December, is the grown-up version. Remember that it's being held at Judgeford Golf Club. Please remember to let Professionals know if you are, or are not, coming.

Tuesday 21 January 2020 will be the first meeting in the New Year. It will be informal and held at Ruby’s on Mana Esplanade.

You can find all the future events here.

Parting thought

Graham Craig gave us the parting thought with a quote from the Greek Philosopher, Plato, 'You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.'
